Take a sec to understand where journalism is at: Gone are the days where print newspapers thrived off local advertising. There simply isn’t a demand for it, and trucking newsprint into town is expensive (and not great look when it comes to the environment.) Basically, the previous model is broken and has been for decades. Self-funding and federal grants is how the volunteer-run project works, and it’s not sustainable because it doesn’t solve the fundamental problem: The newspaper model is traditionally based on getting attention. It does not support journalism. The volunteer-run project has resulted in a significant drop in revenue for this small business. The Phoenix exists because people still believe in local journalism.
…As mentioned in this article, it’s about making a product that’s so good, people are willing to pay for it.
