Note: Graham Smith says he sent this note to Mayor Cindy Fortin and councillors. He also sent it my way.
Dear Mayor Fortin and Council,
I am deeply unhappy with the lack of communication and updates from the District of Peachland during yesterday’s extensive and long water outage. Apart from the initial notification on Facebook and the website, there was only one update at 11.30am on Facebook (after I posted asking for it) and one early afternoon update on the website saying it was ‘hoped’ to get water back sometime that night, if I recall correctly as all references to the outage have been removed from Facebook and the website.
Given that ‘hope’ is not a ‘plan’, this left me in a state of anxiety over whether my water reserves would last and whether I would be able to get my water based heating back on before my house got too cold. This is not a nice feeling, and would have been unnecessary if there had been reasonable communications in place for events of this nature. I can’t execute my own plans to cope with the situation if I don’t know what the situation is.
Is it too much to expect regular updates every two hours for events affecting hundreds of your residents? You have a paid communications person, who I assume wasn’t out helping to do the repair, and a Facebook update takes only minutes, so it should be easy to do updates regularly.
Please do better next time, because there will be a next time.
